"The luxury apartment on the French Riviera that was the longtime residence and studio of artist Henri Matisse while he produced many of his iconic paintings has been listed for €2.48 million (US$2.68 million).
Since Matisse’s death in 1954, the unit at Excelsior Regina Palace, in Nice’s historic district of Cimiez, has had only four owners, including Matisse’s great-grandson and has not been on the market in about a decade, said the listing agent, Eric Laboue of Côte d’Azur Sotheby’s International Realty.
“The Excelsior Régina Palace is a prestigious residence with a majestic staircase in the lobby,” Laboue said. “It’s steeped in history beyond Matisse, and the building is listed, so it’s impossible to build around it, and it guarantees an exceptional view and a park at an address overlooking the city and the sea.”
